Open Day - 24 July 2011

Why not come along and "Take tea with Samaritans". The branch will be open to members of the public from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 24 July as part of the national Samaritans Awareness Day. Visitors to the branch will be invited take tea with the Samaritans, learn more about the work of our volunteers and take a tour of the centre. There will be no charge for admission or refreshments.

Unveiling of artwork

On Sunday 24 July at 2pm, Lord Jones will be unveiling two pieces of art at the Cheltenham Branch.

Local artist and Samaritan volunteer, Judy Richards has produced a painting of forget-me-not flowers. Judy says that the theme of forget-me-nots works at a number of different levels. It could relate to remembering a loved one or remembering that Samaritans are available to support those in distress 24 hours a day. Also we hope that people might remember Samaritans by way of a legacy or through donations made during their lifetime.

Tasked with creating an image celebrating Samaritans, Cheltenham is one of a 119 of the charity’s branches across the UK to submit a piece of artwork.

Using all 119 images, Samaritans commissioned Artists Grit Hartung and Marilou Rabourdi to produce a national piece of artwork, incorporating Cheltenham’s submission. The final artwork is a flexible structure, primarily made out of origami. Spelling out the words ‘Call US’ and ‘Join US’, it uses the branch images printed in black and white to represent night and day, symbolic of Samaritans’ 24 hour service.
